Shabanu
We are currently reading a book, Shabanu. At first I was really not happy with the idea of this book, but when I started to read it, it got so interesting. In the book is an 11 year old girl named Shabanu who is going to be married right when she turns 12. Her older sister Phulan is 14 and is going to marry her cousin, Hamir. Shabanu will be marrying Hamir's brother, Murad. Later in the story, Hamir dies because the owner of the land they live on kills him. Phulan is crushed and Phulan is relieved that her husband is not dead. Phulan does not eat or get out of bed for a long time. But, one day Shabanu hears her mother talking to other women about her. She demands to know what they are talking about and her mother gives in. One of the women fetches Phulan and their mother tells them that Phulan will be marrying Murad. Shabanu is furious and wants to yell. Their mother also says, that Shabanu will be marrying the landowners brother, a 55 year old man who has 3 wives. Shabanu becomes even more furious and refuses to marry him. At the end of the story, after Phulan and Murad are married, Shabanu runs away on a camel to her aunt Sharma's house. She doesn't make it far and her father finds her. He is raging with anger and takers her home.
This book was very interesting to read. It made me think of how it would feel to be Shabanu. She is having a way harder time than Phulan. Phulan's husband did die but now Shabanu has to marry a 55 year old man. There is a small sneak peak of the second book in the back of the book. I read it and it made me a little mad. Shabanu does marry the 55 year old and has a daughter, who is 5 in the sneak peak. I would hate to be a girl in Pakistan, where Shabanu lives, it is just to horrible. I liked this book, but it made me a little mad, sad, and disgusted. |
